Fish Camp... "Gateway to Yosemite "

Fish Camp is a beautiful, very small village on Highway 41 just two miles south of the entrance to Yosemite National Park. A drive through this village will show you the higher elevation look of pine, rustic cabins and the beginnings of the "big trees."

Being surrounded by all the tall pines makes you aware you are very close to Yosemite National Park.

Houses and lots in Fish Camp are very limited as the village is quite small and surrounded by public lands. But those homes, when they are available, are usually spectacular!

There are few businesses in Fish Camp... the post office-general store, several modest lodges and restaurants and a large hotel, the Tenaya Lodge, dominate the area. Fish Camp is a really pleasant place to hike, horseback ride and get close to nature while avoiding the rush of Yosemite. At an elevation of 5,000 feet Fish Camp enjoys cool summers and quiet snowy winters.

Nearby activities include hiking, mountain biking, cross-country and downhill skiing and rock climbing, as well as plenty of trails for off-road vehicles and beautiful scenery for photography.

The early settlement in Fish Camp consisted mainly of loggers who worked the densely forested Sierra Nevada Mountains. They diverted waters in the 1870's from White Chief Mountain, creating Lewis Creek. The loggers then sent lumber down the creek with the assistance of flumes to Madera. There are many remnants of the logging day, including a working logging train.
