CoarseGold

"An Historic Gold Mining Town That Has Come Back To Life! "

CoarseGold
is the first village you come to as you head north on Highway 41.and leave the Central Valley. CoarseGold began life as a raucus gold mining community during the 1850's. It gets its name from the coarse gold flakes found in the river and surrounding mines.

After the gold rush CoarseGold survived for over a hundred years as a sleepy little village with a gas station, store and restaurant-bar... a real old-west gathering and shopping center serving the surrounding ranches nestled in the hills. Today CoarseGold is a village blooming along with the community that surrounds it, yet it retains its historic charm.

The CoarseGold area is one of the fastest-growing communities in California. It is located seven miles south of Oakhurst on Highway 41. Many new homes, a new, upscale mobile home park, and several large-lot real estate projects are sparking this growth. The grocery store has expanded, gas stations have been added, a hardware store and several nice restaurants are right in town.

The Annual CoarseGold Rodeo, three miles down Rd. 415, has been drawing contestants and fans from all over the West for well over fifty years.

CoarseGold is a nice place to live and work. It is a good area for horses and horse-people. Most parcels are three acres or more. CoarseGold is filled with friendly and welcoming people. The village is well above the Central Valley fog. It enjoys the more moderate mountain seasons with occasional smatterings of snow.

Placer mining brought early prosperity to CoarseGold. Mining flourished from 1849 to 1865. By 1850 "Coarse Gold Gulch" had 10,000 residents. Although named for the gold that was found here, coal and quartz were also mined in the early years. Note the monument about CoarseGold across from the CoarseGold's Historic Village on the corner of Highway 41 and Road 415. The grapevine on the trellis is one of the oldest in California.

Points of interest include the Willow Glen Museum (South of Picayune Road/Road 417), the Historic Village at Highway 41 and Raymond Road/Road 415, and Gold Gulch toward the North end of town. There are many old mines in the hills but they are on private properties.and not open to the public.

The CoarseGold Rodeo is an annual event that began over 50 years ago. Of all the contests the "Mutton Busting" is perhaps the most popular with the kids. Children between four and seven years old compete. It is a must-see if you are in the area the last weekend of April or the first weekend of May.
