The east side of this four and
a half mile long
lake is dedicated
to privately owned
cabins and year-around
homes. From
lakefront lots to
small subdivisions
there is a place here
for everyone to enjoy
the beauty of this
tree-shrouded mountain
lake.
Bass Lake is
an all-season lake
located at the 3,500-foot
elevation. It is
truely a four-season
community, with snow
in the winter and
warm sunshine in
the summer... and
all above the fog
and smog of the Central
Valley!
Bass Lake is located between
Oakhurst and North
Fork. Its commercial
center, The Pines
Village, has a post
office, gas
station, year-around
markets, stores and
restaurants. The
heart of the Pines
Village is Ducey's
Lodge and Conference
Center. The west
side of the lake
is a U.S. Forest
Service Federal
Recreation Area
and has numerous
public camp grounds
and picnic areas.
Bass Lake is situated is on
the North
Fork
of Willow
Creek,
a tributary
of the
San Joaquin
River.
Its site,
a lush
meadow
enfolded
in pine
covered
hills,
was discovered
by a
detachment
of the
Mariposa
Battalion,
ledt
by Major
James
D. Savage
in1850.
The lake was created in 1899
when
a small
earthen
dam was
built.
A larger
reservoir
was built
in 1905
and work
on the
present
dam commenced
in 1909.
As a warm-water lake, Bass Lake is ideal for swimming,
boating, fishing, water-skiing and wave running. Other nearby activities
include hiking, mountain biking, cross-country and downhill skiing and
rock climbing, as well as plenty of trails for off-road vehicles and
beautiful scenery for photography.
