Ahwahnee

"Home of the Historic "Wasuma Roundhouse"

Ahwahnee
is a small village just five miles north of Oakhurst on Highway 49 and 21 miles south of Mariposa. It is one of the oldest and smallest villages in the area.

Ahwahnee has its own post office, a general store, a restaurant-bar, a gas station and welding shop all visible on Hwy 49 as you drive through. Just north of the village center is a year-around CDF fire station and the Ahwahnee Elementary School, the center of community activities.

Two miles south of Ahwahnee is an excellent eighteen hole golf course. Nestled in the hills around Ahwahnee are several small rural subdivisions with lots that are one to five acres in size. Mixed in with the subdivisions are numerous ranches; some working cattle ranches, others are active apple farms.

Ahwahnee is a great area to retire or raise your children. It is a very active community with soul of its own and is welcoming of newcomers.

The Wasuma Round House, one of only two or three authentic ceremonial Indian Roundhouses surviving in the entire State of California is open to the public in Ahwahnee.

Officially known as the Wasuma Roundhouse State Historical Park, its spacious oak-shaded grounds include a picnic area, old Indian grinding stones and other Indian artifacts.

Tribal ceremonies are still held at the Roundhouse in observation of births, of harvests, to reach the spirits and to mourn the dead. It is where the traditional Indian gathering of the Yosemite Miwok and Chukchansi Yokuts takes place. Wonderful dancing, drumming, and other ancient ceremonies are held here.

Traditionally, when a tribal leader died, the Roundhouse was burned and a new one built. The current Roundhouse was first built in 1903 to replace one burned ten years earlier upon the death of the tribal chief. The roundhouse was restored in 1985 under the sponsorship of the E Clampus Vitus Grub Gulch chapter and local Indian groups.
